Sunshine & Los Lagos de Covadonga

Sunshine & Los Lagos de Covadonga

Asturias really is one of those places that surprises you with how much there is packed into it. Green hills, mountains everywhere and little villages hidden between them. We visited in mid-April and it felt like a good time to go, still fairly quiet and without the busier summer crowds.

We got the bus from Oviedo and stopped in Cangas de Onís for some lunch before heading up towards Covadonga. We spent a bit of time around the church and sanctuary before carrying on. We also completely misunderstood the famous fountain underneath the cave and thought we were drinking holy water, only to find out afterwards it was actually the Fountain of Marriage. Apparently drinking from all seven spouts means you'll be married within a year. Useful information to discover after taking a drink.

Once up at Los Lagos, the scenery changes again. The walks around Lago Enol and Lago Ercina are pretty relaxed and easy to follow, more about taking your time and enjoying where you are than anything too difficult. I can see why so many people recommend it.

There's a restaurant near the start of the trails and sitting outside in the sunshine with a glass of sidra ended up being one of my favourite parts of the day.
